Digital Library Center: Digitization Activities and Average Times

All digitization complies with national standards.  A number of variables impact the actual time it takes to complete a project, such as:

  • Library priorities
  • Expedited items
  • Availability of information about the item(s) (what constitutes each item; number of items; any existing information, list, or inventory)
  • Availability of catalog record or metadata
  • Language of material
  • Physical format of material (e.g., print, photograph, map; and size/structure)
  • Intellectual format of material (monograph, serial, and/or series)
  • Copyright requirements/permissions
  • Date material last reviewed by a library liaison and department
  • Physical condition of material
  • Degree to which automation can be utilized
  • Space availability and system functionality
  • Need for collection pages, banners, text, new displays, etc.

Consultation, preferably early in a project timeline, is critical.
